Four Key Benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Surveying

AI has documented benefits for the surveying industry. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) predicts that AI is expected to influence almost 90% of core surveying tasks in the next decade.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents substantial advantages for the surveying sector, such as enhanced precision and accuracy, improved risk evaluation, data automation, and a positive impact on environmental sustainability. The integration of AI technology empowers surveyors to optimize their workflows, minimize the risk of human error, and attain outcomes that are both more efficient and sustainable.

Here are four key benefits of AI in surveying:

  1. Increased Accuracy and Precision: AI-powered software in drones can perform repetitive tasks and complete time-consuming tasks like drafting common features including vegetation, buildings, and roads. This allows surveyors to convert aerial datasets into CAD site plans with fewer staff. And, AI integrated drones provide high-quality images, videos, and analytics for surveyors to complete reporting and analysis tasks and reports. This leads to faster and more correct data capture, reducing the potential for human error.

  2. Improved Risk Assessment: AI can be used to automatically to assign priority to risks on job sites, allowing project teams to focus their limited time and resources on the most significant risk factors. AI risk assessment can also go beyond finding present hazards to assess future potential threats. By feeding high-quality and complete data to AI robots, surveyors can gain insights into site risks such as mine subsidence or flooding.

  3. Data Automation: AI technology enables surveyors to research, analyse data, and predict outcomes at a fraction of the time it takes to complete manual tasks. For example, AI-enabled robots can automate boundary data gathering and building element identification, estimate property valuations, and lead to considerable project cost savings. Automated valuation can produce more exact estimates, reducing the need for manual intervention.

  4. Environmental Sustainability: The construction industry is resource-intensive and has a significant impact on the environment, accounting for 38% of global energy consumption. AI technology can help make surveying more sustainable by reducing energy-related emissions and shortening project completion times. For example, solar-powered robots can further reduce electrical use, while data-intensive AI surveys reduce the need for site visits and rework periods, resulting in reduced transportation-related emissions.

ACSIS  OUT & ABOUT

The ISNSW annual conference was held at our home town, Newcastle. Time to Connect in the Hunter was the first event to kick 2023 off. There were sensational activities giving delegates the chance to network with like-minded professionals and learn from some of the industry's best. Twilight sailing, guided tour of Fort Scratchley tunnel system, cocktail dinner and an aerobatic display over Fort Scratchley by the amazing Matt Hall Racing.
